THE RULES OF WAR

 

 

YOUR TASKS:

 

1.       Do an internet search for WWI technology to complete any empty blanks on your chart and to complete the terms/definitions at the top.

2.     Locate the Avalon Project at Yale University and the Modern History Sourcebook hosted by Fordham University.  Bookmark each for future reference.  They are excellent databases of historical documents related to law, diplomacy, and major world events.

3.     Search for the home site of the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, and answer the questions in Section A.

4.     Locate The Hague Convention Respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land.  Note that there have been many treaties and agreements signed at The Hague, which was and still is a centre for international law and justice, so you will have to be certain you have the correct document.  Then answer the questions in Section B.

 

SECTION A: THE PEACE PALACE

a)    When was the Peace Palace built and by whom?

b)   What was the purpose of the Peace Palace?

c)    Identify and outline one major multinational issue in which its mediation was successful.

d)   How is it now able to function more successfully in mediating international disputes?

 

SECTION B: THE HAGUE CONVENTION

a)    What was the purpose of the convention?  What nations were signatory to it?

b)   What was considered a legitimate reason for declaring war under the terms of the convention?

c)    Who was considered a legal combatant?  What made one an illegal combatant?

d)   What rights did prisoners have under the convention?

e)    According to the convention, how were civilians to be dealt with in the course of battle and in occupied areas?

f)      How was a weapon determined to be legal or illegal?  Give examples of weapons used in WWI that fall into each category.

g)    Under the convention, what tactics would be considered to be illegal?

h)   Why do you think the convention was unsuccessful in upholding these standards during WWI?
